It’s pretty obvious that the Island Love WI platform, would write a positive review of Nicky Jam’s Netflix series.
Loving Caribbean Culture, stories and content, is what we do. However, it’s worth remembering that the positive review is nevertheless authentic and genuine. If Nicky Jam’s Netflix series had missed the mark, the easiest thing to do would be to say nothing and keep it moving.

Spoiler alert – this article is only for those who have watched Nicky Jam’s Netflix series. If you’ve never seen it, go and watch it now!!!!!
There are 13 episodes and it is based on recollecting Nicky Jam’s journey from childhood, to Reggaeton Legend.
One of the main reason’s this story is so valuable is the fact that it is a story of victory. Of winning, despite the odds, being Puerto Rican, from the developing world, the Caribbean, the ghetto, losses, crime etc, etc.
It is a story of an underdog, of poverty, however ultimately it is a story of hope and of victory. With good reason, Nicky Jam entitled the series: El Ganador (the winner, in Spanish).
The juxtaposition of Puerto Rican culture, the ghetto in America, Puerto Rico, Colombian Culture, Dominican Culture, Latin American Culture etc, etc, is priceless.
Another thing that this series does is it allows us to see the world firsthand through the lens, or point of view of Nicky Jam. A Puerto Rican, born in America, to Puerto Rican and Dominican parents that eventually finds himself a home in Colombia.

Stay Away From Drugs & Addiction.
Another key theme of the series is drugs. With the main lesson being to stay as far away from them as possible. Drugs, were the root cause of most and maybe all of Nicky Jam’s greatest battles.
Being human, most of us have two sides of ourselves: a part that pulls us towards our dreams and a part that pulls us away from them.
Maybe we are blessed enough to have a life free from a battle with drugs. However, we likely have another vice or battle, that threatens to undermine the impact we have on this planet. This story is a reminder to all of us to spend less of our energy wastefully. So that we too, can be winners.
Winning his personal war with drugs, was the victory that made it possible for Nicky Jam to be: un ganador. To make decisions from a place of conviction and clarity. To control his destiny and win back his family.
Which, was another valuable and powerful lesson, that Nicky Jam’s story displayed. Having money is cool, even amazing, however ultimately, Nicky’s greatest victory, was winning his family back. His parents, his children, Daddy Yankee etc, etc.
One of the things about true stories is they tend to hit different from fictional stories. The truth contained in Nicky Jam’s life story is touching because it is relatable. We all can relate to (some of) the ups and downs that we see Nicky Jam go through.
Seeing Nicky dodge death, time and time again is valuable for those of us that choose to have faith in a higher power. The story is also heartwarming and encouraging for those of us that believe in destiny.
This story is one where we see Nicky Jam’s dreams come true despite having a front seat view of all the burdens Nicky had to let go of, to become a winner.
The bottom line of this story is one of a graphic, real and true, success story. This, is what makes the series worth celebrating. It is a Caribbean success story. Every Caribbean success story is worth celebrating (unconditionally) because success is always preferable to failure.
Latinas.
A story about Nicky Jam would be incomplete if it never included the ladies. The Netflix series gives a very real depiction of the Latina woman: beautiful, passionate, with different complexions and motivations.
Throughout the series, we get to see the full range of different Latina women. Those that just want to have a good time, those that are mothers and aunties, (that only want men to do their fair share). We see some Latinas motivated by money and ego. Whilst others are motivated by family, their careers and love.
The series basically captures the full range of the different types of Latina’s that exist. Giving us neither an excessively negative or positive depiction, but instead, a real one.
Furthermore, this Netflix series gives us Reggaeton. All fans of Reggaeton music should thoroughly enjoy this one. Reggaeton is a house that Nicky Jam helped build. One of the most memorable takeaways from this series, is the music itself.
Without a doubt, this Netflix series contains more than its fair share of Reggaeton anthems!!!!!!! Anybody new to Nicky Jam and/or Reggaeton Music, may actually find themselves getting the most from watching it.
Nicky’s skill, bravado, persona etc, etc, is definitely one of the things that shine through the most. The raw, direct, inimitable Reggaeton flavor. Packs a considerable punch as hit after, Reggaeton hit, forces you to surrender to the power of Reggaeton.
Whether you love or loathe Nicky Jam, his place and the place of his music in the history of Reggaeton is undeniable. This Netflix series, emphatically displays this fact. Yes, this series contains many lessons that you can apply to make sure that you also win in life.
The series absolutely captures the beauty of Latina women, the struggle, Puerto Rico, Colombia, etc, etc. However, in addition to all of this, the series contains a lot of the greatness of Reggaeton itself.
Simply put, this Netflix series really does bring a lot to the table.
Teamwork Made This Dream Work.
Additionally, this more than just a beautiful story. It is a beautiful story that is well told!!!!
Nicky Jam definitely had a great team put this project together. The story is told in a way that enables the viewer to time and location travel, to different parts of Nicky Jam’s life, in a way that nevertheless fits perfectly with one another.
The viewer bounces in between Boston, Puerto Rico, Colombia, childhood Nicky, adolescent Nicky and adult Nicky. Ensuring that Nicky, is always understood and also that the viewer is always captivated/entertained.
Chances are that one you view the first episode, you will keep watching until you see all 13 episodes.
Favorite Parts Of The Series.
Okay, this is where some of the plot twists are discussed, so anyone who has never seen El Ganador – should leave this paragraph unread.
Perhaps the most moving scene in the movie is when El Cangris (Daddy Yankee & Nicky Jam) are performing live on stage. When Nicky Jam’s would be killers attempt to open fire on Nicky Jam.
However, the power of the people in the crowd force the would be killers to retreat and retrace their steps. Whilst Daddy Yankee and Nicky Jam (El Cangris) pick up where they left off.
What makes this scene powerful is the fact it lirerally showed that Reggaeton beat armed gunmen. It showed that both Nicky Jam and Daddy Yankee were untouchable on their home turf and only added to their legendary status. Even that early on in their careers.
Similarly, another powerful scene is when Nicky Jam is performing and ends it in signature Nicky Jam fashion.
However, before Nicky Jam leaves, a Colombiana starts singing his new hit (at the time): “Piensas En Mi”.
Letting Nicky Jam know that he was more than just his old school hits. The crowd join in and they all start singing Piensas En Mi. Nicky Jam still had it then and he still does to this day.
The series, is full of other memorable moments, some in jail, some with family, some in the US, some in Colombia, DR, Puerto Rico, etc, etc.
Whatever you do, if you’ve never seen this series, remember to watch it so that you will be able to see which moments are most memorable to you.
