Black Love In The Caribbean – A Numbers Game.
Black Love is highly relevant within the context of the Caribbean because, as mentioned in a previous article, black people are a majority in several Caribbean countries.
Therefore, from a numbers perspective, the health of black love in the Caribbean. Speaks to the reality of the black experience, within the Caribbean, which in turn impacts the region.
As mentioned in a previous article, the health of black love seems uncertain. Despite the fact that there are so many black people in the Caribbean.
Some of the main reasons for this, is the fact that in many cases, many of these countries have a majority of their (educated) citizens living overseas. Which points to a profound truth for both Caribbean people at home and abroad. Many Caribbean people are in survival mode.
The old saying of beggars being unable to be choosers, rings true for many. Some people are making it up as they go along and motivated to move in whatever direction, best secures their survival.
However, there are two sides to every coin and for some black people, black love is non negotiable. For these black people, black love is confirmation of their freedom and right to choose who they love, in a world ordered by capitalism.
The Still Present Past.
Under capitalism, the winner is whoever has the most money. The most free and powerful, are those with the most financial power. By contrast, those with the least financial power, (in the estimations of some) are best served to further themselves by dating someone more financially powerful than they are.
However, human beings are human beings and economic theory, or capitalism can only predict human behaviour but so far. As aforementioned, there are two sides to every coin and whilst some people are inclined to move one way. Others are inclined to move in a totally different direction.
For some the wounds opened during slavery are too fresh, to allow for history to repeat itself and the financially powerful, to dictate their love lives.
Furthermore, some are more inclined to put their faith in black love, to meet their different needs.
Black love is deeper than its outward perception. It is again, an expression and confirmation of black freedom, to choose black love. It is also, confirmation of black faith. That is, black people’s faith in themselves and their ability to find their own solutions, to the challenges they face.
Black love is particularly important because of the healing it brings. Whilst all love brings healing to all wounds. What makes black love particularly special and valuable to black men and women is the black validation and unity it brings.
Black love allows some Caribbean people to affirm their value to each other without the need for the presence or approval, of any other third party. Much like self esteem and self confidence, we are because we believe and affirm as much. With black love, each participant is affirmed and validated by their significant, black, other. This is a gift, that only black love can give. Unneccessary to some, meanwhile, totally mandatory to others.
Moreover, as previously mentioned. Black love, especially in the developing world of the Caribbean. Is for some, the best way of being smart, efficient, wise and getting the most out of their limited resources.
A Survival & Economic Tool.
One thing that is true, even in this capitalistic world for black love is that it effects the economic reality of all involved. However, more awareness of this power of black love to effect the financial reality of those involved, is needed.
Most people are aware that marriage, impacts the financial health of those involved. However, it is less commonplace, to see non married people pool their financial resources to achieve financial progress faster.
If one thing is apparent in April 2026, it is that the Caribbean is subject to receiving environmental and economic shocks for actions taking place in the developed world.
Which basically reveals the precarious and often reactionary situation that the Caribbean often finds itself in. With this being the case, being smart and pooling resources to maximise financial progress is more than just a preference. It is the best means of ensuring survival.
Unity Brings Strength.
Instead of there being a thousand single people, all relying on themselves for their survival. There would be five hundred couples. Moreover, if all of these couples knew each other and were able to support each other. The resilience and ability of Caribbean people to ensure their own survival, skyrockets. Finally, governments would likely find citizens more willing to procreate under these circumstances too.
In this scenario, Caribbean people go from being alone and always in reactionary mode. To being profoundly connected, more empowered and able to better plan their way through life more emphatically.
Instead of always being reactive, Caribbean people would be more capable of using their initiative, to be proactive.
In the developed world, single people, probably have more options. However, us in the Caribbean have less of those luxuries. Instead, the same survival mode, is the exact reason we should move smarter and wiser.
Black love is more than an emotional or racial ideal.
It is also an economic tool, capable of ensuring that Caribbean people, make the most of their limited resources.
